I started my vegan journey in July 2017 after being a vegetarian diet for a year. I was motivated to go vegan for several different reasons. I definitely credit the documentary, “What the Health” for my change.Ethically and morally I could not stand to watch animals be tortured and tormented for the sake of “food”. I also went vegan for the many health benefits that the diet has. As an African American woman, I believe that it is extremely important to highlight healthy eating and challenge the status quo of what communities of color eat.
In environments where a vicious cycle of poverty, food insecurity and hunger exist it is up to us to take steps to fight the cycle and one way of doing that is changing how we eat and providing outlets for healthy options within our communities. After going vegan I felt so much lighter and my energy levels improved. I started to really embrace cooking and explore new foods. Being vegan has allowed me to see the world in a different light, develop more compassion and gain an eagerness to share healthy eating with the world.
My advice to people that want to go vegan is to learn as much as you can about the lifestyle. Yes documentaries are great but it’s important to do some research on your own. I also recommend joining a meetup group/ club and surrounding yourself with like minded people to support you on your journey!
